Hello! This school year is off to a wonderful start, it has been great to come back and see all of the students! We are very excited to have a new School Counselor working with Ms. Mercado. Her name is Ms. Occhionero-- so if you are a 9th or 10th grader this year she will be your primary guidance counselor (Of course, either guidance counselor is happy to help any student). Stop in and introduce yourself to her! If you are an 11th or 12th grader Ms. Mercado will be your primary guidance counselor.
Schedule changes are finally done. Over the next couple of months we will be working on senior audits, and making sure that every senior has what they need to graduate. Senior parents will receive a mailing home verifying what their child needs for graduation. We will also be working on signing up every senior for the SAT and/or ACT. Students should check with their guidance counselor to see if they are eligible for a fee waiver. We require that every senior takes the SAT at least once. If a student would like to sign up at home they simply go to www.collegeboard.org. This website allows students to sign up for the SAT, study for the SAT, and research colleges and careers. You can also log on to Naviance for FREE SAT and ACT prep!! We will also be working on having seniors apply to college, they can see Ms. Mercado or Mrs. Mahon. If students need letters of recommendation they should be sure to ask their teacher or guidance counselor EARLY! We will also be going into classrooms to introduce ourselves to any students that we do not know and to do some developmental guidance lessons. We will also be calling down students to meet with them individually.
Ms. Mercado will be holding after school sessions for college application and scholarship help on Monday's and Wednesday's from 2:30-3:30. Please sign up in her office if you plan on staying after. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting school year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact either of us.
Below are our college credit options that we offer at the Science and Technology Magnet High School.
COLLEGE CREDIT OPTION
Jumpstart Your Future Career!
Dual enrollment programs are classes taken in high school that count as college credits.
Research shows participation in these programs leads to a greater likelihood of
completing a college degree. A student who successfully completes 12 or more college
credits in high school has completed the equivalent of one full college semester. This
gives the students a huge head start, and also saves them thousands of dollars.
Here at Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut
(STMHS) and New London High School (NLHS) there are several academic options that
provide students with the opportunity to audit college courses and/or receive college credits:
College Career Pathways (Three Rivers Community College)
 Mitchell College
Connecticut College (New London Scholar Program)
 ECE English (University of Connecticut)
 Coast Guard Academy
 Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
 Project Lead the Way
Enrollment in College Credit Options is limited by the following criteria:
 Teacher/counselor recommendation
Ability to fit into student's academic schedule
 Career interest
 Prior academic performance
Programs listed with an asterisk are open to students enrolled in STMHS or NLHS. For
further information contact the New London High School Guidance Staff at
